BODY OF WORK

KEHATÄIS
TÖÖD

Body of Work explores both physical and invisible labor, maneuvering through gender roles, expectations, and power dynamics within the traditionally male-dominated field of construction. Dripping sweat, grunts, and groans accompany the repeated lifting of heavy objects from place to place. What is the choreography of a catcall?

Civil engineer Maret Lüllman acts as stage designer in collaboration with Rebecca Green, who will direct and choreograph. As a civil engineer and builder, Maret Lüllman has worked for many years in strongly male-dominated fields. Her unique observations around respect, behavior, and power dynamics are both insightful and informative in the work. Rebecca Green has long explored the themes of entanglement, emotional labor, femininity, sexuality, and power structures in human relationships, and she continues to investigate these topics through movement and the body..

Okei, okei, okei.

poest koju jalutasin.

Jeah.

Okay, okay, okay.  ok so, the whole thing started when I was walking home from

the shop one day. It was, I think the last couple days of summer but, I remember that particular day was super hot outside. yeah, so I went through the small park on the way back to my house, I had my plastic selver bag in my hand. I went across Tartu mnt towards this sort of smaller road that I usually go on because I like to look at the really big smoke stack, the big red and white smoke stack on my way home….uhm, yeah. So I cross the road and suddenly there was no more road. It was just a gravel pit, basically. They had taken away the asphalt because they were doing some construction and they left like these big rocks, as a replacement, which they do all the time in Tallinn it seems like. Yeah, so I kept walking and on the right there was a building that was under construction and there was a fence fencing it off, but you could see through the fence, there was no covering. And behind it there were a bunch of construction workers. These men were all sitting outside on their lunch break, just like basking in the sun basically, and they were all sort of sitting around on different concrete blocks and pieces of construction material, and they had their faces like turned up towards the sun, and some people looked like they were taking a nap, they were closing their eyes, they looked like little lizards on a rock, and there was

one man…on the side and he was eating a sandwich…and sort of leaning back on his elbows and, he was…completely drenched in sweat. He was wearing a white t- shirt so it was like wet sticking onto his body. He had like dark brown curly hair and it was stuck to his forehead and there were these beads of sweat, and so I just kept walking a little closer, and at one point it must just have been too hot because he reached down and he started to lift his shirt and he was peeling off the t-shirt super slowly and it was wet, sticking to his body and you could see underneath the t shirt his like tan skin, like he had already been doing this for days and days. Then he took a bite of the sandwich, and this huge drop of mayo dropped down off the bread and it went directly onto his six pack and then it started dripping down towards his belt line, and then right in that moment, he turned his head and I was coming up closer to the fence because I was passing by, and we made an eye contact… he started to smile at me very mischievously, then he reached down and wiped the mayo off of his belly with his fingers and then he put his fingers in his mouth to suck it off. Yeah.
